Bulgaria FA president quits after England football team bombarded with racism during match | World | News

Bulgarian Prime Minister Bokyo Borissov called on the FA president to resign after racist abuse from Bulgarian fans was aimed at England players in the qualifying match on Monday evening.

Tyrone Mings, Raheem Sterling and Marcus Rashford started the match and were booed throughout, while there have also been reports of monkey chants from sections of the crowd.

An official statement released on Tuesday said: “After many years spent in the post and with his many contacts at a high international level, Mr. Mihailov expresses his firm readiness to continue to help the development of Bulgarian football in every way possible.”

Cameras for ITV picked up fans making Nazi salutes and UEFA are going to launch an investigation after reading the referee’s report.

The game, which came close to be called off, was already taking place in a partially closed stadium after UEFA punished the Bulgarian FA for two previous acts of offensive chanting and displaying inappropriate banners.

But despite the horrendous scenes the Bulgarian FA president Mihaylov has tried to turn the gun on England players, by blaming them and Gareth Southgate for making false accusations.

This is a breaking stoy. More to follow…
