Brexiteer in furious rant at ‘100% Remain’ Supreme Court – vows to return power to people | Politics | News

Boris Johnson‘s decision to suspend Parliament for five weeks was deemed illegal by 11 Supreme Court judges, who ruled unanimously it was “void and of no effect”. In her closing statement, Supreme Court President Lady Hale said Mr Johnson’s advice to the Queen to prorogue had been unlawful because it prevented Parliament from carrying out its lawful duty. But Brexiteers have been left furious, claiming the ruling is just another blatant attempt to stop Britain’s departure from the European Union.

Former Conservative MEP for East of England David C Bannerman raged on Twitter: “I am afraid I am not at all surprised at the Supreme Court decision.

“They are the Establishment writ large and are 100 percent Remain.

“Lord Kerr wrote Article 50 of Lisbon?! After we achieve Brexit, we must do some urgent reworking of our Constitution to put the people back in charge.”

Brexit Party MEP Rupert Lowe said the judiciary’s ruling in politics “sets a very dangerous precedent”.

He tweeted: ”The message from today’s court ruling is clear. Our establishment is determined to stop Brexit and will stop at no means to do so.

“The judiciary has strayed too far into politics. This sets a very dangerous precedent indeed.”

Brexit Party candidate and QC Julian Malins raged he was “astonished” by the ruling from the Supreme Court.

He warned of “extraordinary consequences” over many years to come, with “endless litigation”.

Mr Malins said: “I am astonished that the Supreme Court has decided that this is not covered by the 9th provision of the Declaration of Right – that is to say, it is not proceeding.

“I mean Parliament consists of the Commons, the Lords and her Majesty – it’s plainly a decision that took place as part of Parliamentary procedure, and to have the Supreme Court rule it unlawful, I am astonished by that ruling. It will have extraordinary consequences in the coming decades, there will be endless litigation, a myriad of political activities.”

Conservative MP Andrew Bridgen exploded into a scathing rant aimed at the Supreme Court, describing its proroguing decision as “disgusting”.

Speaking on the BBC’s Victoria Derbyshire show, he said: “I think what we have got is a Parliament is completely out of step with the sentiment of the country.

“They are holding our democracy to ransom and are completely ignoring the vote we had in 2016 to Leave the European Union.

“It is an absolute disgrace as far as I’m concerned.”

Brexit Party MEP Richard Tice raged the ruling from the Supreme Court will see Britain forced to remain in the EU past the Brexit deadline of October 31.

He claimed Mr Johnson will have to ask Brussels for another delay to Brexit, but the Prime Minister had insisted he would “rather die in a ditch” than to do this.

But Mr Tice told BBC News: “What is absolutely clear, and the public needs to understand, is we are not leaving the European Union on October 31.

“There will need to be a request to the European Union for an extension. When that penny drops people are going to be increasingly angry across the country.”

Mr Johnson, who is New York for the UN General Assembly where he will hold crunch Brexit talks with several world leaders, had insisted he will not resign if the Supreme Court ruled against him.

He said on Monday: “I believe the reasons for wanting a Queen’s Speech are very good indeed.”

The Prime Minister added: “Parliament has been sitting for its longest period since the civil war. To the best of my knowledge, it has always stopped in September for at least 100 years.

“We must have a Queen’s speech, we have a big domestic agenda, we have to get on tackling the priorities of the British people.”

Mr Johnson could now face demands to appear before MPs as soon as tomorrow after Commons Speaker John Bercow announced the House would resume its business almost immediately.

There will be no weekly session of Prime Minister’s Questions, but Mr Bercow warned there would be scope for applications for emergency debates and calls for ministers to be summoned to the House.
