Brexit news: Trump defends Boris in press call as PM asked ‘very nasty question’ | UK | News

A reporter called out to the Prime Minister asking if he will resign following the Supreme Court’s ruling. He asked: “Some of your critics are saying you should resign because you misled the Queen by shutting Parliament down. How do you respond to that?” President Trump waited for Mr Johnson to finish giving his answer before defending him and telling off the reporter.

Speaking at the press conference, Mr Johnson said: “As I said earlier on, we respect the judiciary in our country, we respect the court, I disagree profoundly with what they had to say.

“I think it was entirely right to go ahead with a plan for a Queen’s speech. This is the longest period we haven’t had a Queen’s speech for 400 years.

“We’ve got a dynamic and domestic agenda we need to be getting on with; more police on the streets, investment in our national health service, improving our education.

“We need to get on with that and frankly we need to get on with Brexit.

“That is the overwhelming view of the British people whether they voted to Leave or Remain, they want to get this thing done by October 31 and that’s what we’re going to do.”

Trump interjected: “That was a very nasty question from a great American reporter.”

Turning to Mr Johnson’s fate, the US President added: “I know him well. Don’t worry, he’s not going anywhere.”

The moment comes as Mr Trump said in his speech he is ready to make an exception trade deal with the UK.

“Whether that is new tax allowances for investment. Or speeding up public procurement contracts.

“Or creating free ports and new enterprise zones.

“Or devising better regulation for the sectors in which the UK leads the world.

“We want a market that is open to the world. With the most competitive tax rates and the best-skilled workforce in the hemisphere.”
