Brexit News: Phillip Lee blames ‘disgraceful’ Rees-Mogg as he tries to defend defection | UK | News

While speaking to Sky News’ Kay Burley former Tory MP Phillip Lee insisted an interview between Jacob Rees-Mogg and a consultant neurologist forced him to make his decision to defect. He explained that all “decent people” must consider their actions now regarding how they react to the prospect of a no deal Brexit. Mr Lee began by saying: “It has been building with me for some time Kay, I think you know that.

“But yesterday morning an interview took place with Jacob Rees-Mogg and a consultant neurologist.

“Jacob Rees-Mogg was just disgraceful in his manner and the way in which he spoke to a member of my profession.

“So if I am going to site an incident, the straw that broke the camel’s back it was that.

“It was disgraceful, it was about ignoring evidence, it was about showing disrespect to experts, to people with professional standing and knowledge.

“If this is what Brexit is about, If this is what this project is about, ignoring expert advice, ignoring democracy and trying to circumvent Parliament.

“Any decent person must ask themselves, must look in the mirror today and say I do not want to be a part to that.

“That is what I have done and that is why I am proud to have joined the Liberal Democrats.”

Mr Lee also told LBC Eddie Mair what “tipped him over the edge” was the disdain and disrespect Jacob Rees-Mogg showed for Dr David Nicholl.

“What level of mortality rate are you willing to accept in light of a no-deal Brexit.”

Mr Rees-Mogg snapped: “I don’t think there is any reason to suppose that a no-deal Brexit should lead to a mortality rate.

“I think this is the worst excess of project fear.

“I am surprised a doctor in your position would be fear-mongering in this way on public radio.”
