Brexit news: I’d rather ‘boil my own head’ than hand power to Corbyn says Hammond | UK | News

Speaking to MPs in the Commons debate on whether to pass a bill that could force Boris Johnson to delay the Brexit process until January, the former Chancellor and former Conservative MP claimed he would rather “boil his head” than hand power to Jeremy Corbyn. The shocking claim comes as Boris Johnson accused Tory rebels who were stripped of their Conservative whip last night of facilitating a Labour Government if they teamed with the opposition once again and passed the bill this evening.

Mr Hammond said: “By setting the bar as he has with the total removal of the backstop, Boris Johnson has set the bar at a level which is impossible for the European Union to comply with.

“The claim that he’s made against us is that by supporting this bill we are handing power to the Leader of the opposition.

“Mr Speaker I would sooner boil my head than hand power to the leader of the opposition.

“The purpose of this bill is to instruct this Government and this administration how to conduct the UK’s future arrangements with the EU.

“It is not an attempt to remove this Government and it is certainly not an attempt to hand power to the leader of the opposition.”

MPs defeated the Government on Tuesday night in the first parliamentary vote faced by Boris Johnson since he became Prime Minister.

Tuesday’s motion, tabled by Sir Oliver Letwin, saw 21 Tory MPs voting against the Government as they joined the opposition to ensure Boris Johnson could not take the UK out of the EU without a deal.

All 21 Tory MPs, including Mr Hammond, were later stripped of their Conservative whip and will now stand as independent MPs in a shocking move by the Prime Minister.
