Brexit news: 70,000 Europeans to attend farewell Brexit celebration on October 31 | World | News

The party will be held in the Netherlands to mark the UK’s scheduled exit from the bloc in 71 days time. More than 9,000 people have already signed up to the celebration with a further 62,000 have stated they are interested in the event advertised on Facebook. The event will hosted by media worker Ron Toekook in the seaside village of Wijk aan Zee – located 28 miles from Amsterdam.

Mr Toekook wants to give Britain a bittersweet farewell and has wished the UK all the best on its new “exciting adventure” outside of the EU.

He said: “It will be a nice goodbye to a good friend who is going on an exciting adventure, but is perhaps not too bright.”

The sendoff will be a European knees-up with food and drinks from across the continent.

Mr Toekook said the celebration will involve “sitting in a deck chair with Dutch chips, French wine and German beer, watching Britain as it closes itself off”.

As the curtain closes on Britain’s membership from the EU, Mr Toekook said there might even be a chorus of Vera Lynn classic.

He added: “If there is enough interest there may be a band that can play… ‘We’ll Meet Again’.”

Britain’s exit from the bloc drew closer this afternoon following talks between Boris Johnson and Angela Merkel in Berlin.

The German Chancellor said a breakthrough in the Brexit impasse could be reached within the next 30 days.

Mr Merkel said the controversial Northern Ireland backstop had always been a “fallback position” and could be solved well before the Halloween Brexit date.

She told Mr Johnson “If one is able to solve this conundrum, if one finds this solution, we said we would probably find it in the next two years to come but we can also maybe find it in the next 30 days to come.

Mr Johnson said he was “more than happy” with the timetable proposed by his German counterpart.

He added: “I must say I am very glad listening to you tonight Angela to hear that at least the conversations that matter can now properly begin.

“You have set a very blistering timetable of 30 days – if I understood you correctly, I am more than happy with that.”
