Brexit latest: Leaked emails suggest Boris Johnson will prorogue Parliament for five weeks | Politics | News

In an email seen by the Observer, sent to a number 10 adviser from senior government advisers, the initial legal guidance is the prorogation may be possible, unless stopped by action in the courts. The idea was first mooted by Dominic Raab, since made Foreign Secretary by Mr Johnson. As reported by The Guardian, Shadow Brexit Secretary Keir Starmer has said: “Any plan to suspend parliament at this stage would be outrageous. MPs must take the earliest opportunity to thwart this plan and to stop a no-deal Brexit.”

Meanwhile, one of Mr Cox’s predecessors, prominent Remainer Dominic Grieve added: “This memo, if correct, shows Boris Johnson’s contempt for the House of Commons.

“It may be possible to circumvent the clear intention of the House of Commons in this way but it shows total bad faith.

“Excluding the house from a national crisis that threatens the future of our country is entirely wrong.”

Mr Johnson had previously said he was “not attracted” to the measure but has stopped short of explicitly ruling it out.

The suspension of Parliament if it does happen, would occur between Parliament returning from the summer recess and before the last EU summit before Brexit Day on October 31.

Whilst travelling to Biarritz for the G7, Mr Johnson said: “I think it’s parliament’s job now to respect not just the will of the people but to remember what the overwhelming majority of them promised to do over and over and over again, which is to get Brexit done, to respect the will of the people, and to come out of the EU on 31 October. That is what I am confident our parliament will do.”

A government insider so there was no clear or definitive plan to prorogue Parliament yet.

The source added: “As a matter of routine, No 10 officials ask for legal and policy advice every day.”
