Boris Johnson first in line for US trade deal vows Trump aide | UK | News

A Downing Street spokesman said: “The Prime Minister spoke to President Trump today. They discussed global economic issues and trade, and the Prime Minister updated the President on Brexit.” The two leaders, who were on good terms before Mr Johnson became PM, have met and talked on the phone several times before. The White House said they held discussions on trade, 5G and global security, and on how to thrash out a new partnership for after we leave the EU. Both leaders have openly stressed how keen they are to get a huge trade deal signed after Britain leaves the bloc.

They will meet for the first time since Mr Johnson succeeded Theresa May at the G7 summit in Biarritz later this month.

A senior Trump administration official said ahead of Mr Bolton’s talks that they were “very happy” that the new government were so keen for a trade deal.

Mrs May’s government “didn’t want to do it, this Government does”, they added.

And they said the President “wants to see a successful British exit from the European Union” and that a trade deal would give both countries a huge boost.
