Arsenal news: Unai Emery faces fresh setback as university appearance cancelled | Football | Sport

A scheduled guest appearance by Unai Emery this week with university students has been cancelled after ‘negative comments’ aimed at the beleaguered Arsenal manager.

Emery’s future at Arsenal is in major doubt after a poor run of form has left them behind in the race for the top four.

Arsenal are eight points off fourth-placed Chelsea, 19 behind leaders Liverpool and have not won a league game since October 6.

It has led to heavy speculation about Emery’s position with some reports suggesting his dismissal is imminent.

Emery is expected to be in charge of Arsenal’s Europa League match against Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday.

And the following day he was due to appear at the University Campus of Football Business in Wembley for a talk with students alongside Spanish football expert Guillem Balague.

But the appearance has been scrapped at short notice after organisers sent a message to the students.

“It is with much regret that we can no longer present Unai Emery to UCFB students this Friday,” the statement said.

“We have noticed that there have been a number of negative comments aimed at Mr Emery when the guest appearance was initially announced.

“We would like to take this opportunity to remind all students of the digital footprint that you create, which could impact you throughout your career within the football and sports industry.

“Please be mindful of this when interacting with UCFB guests, partners and fellow industry professionals.”

Speaking earlier this week on Sky Sports, Jamie Carragher said Emery is not the level of manager they need to get back to the top.

“I think the reason the Arsenal fans are chanting for Emery to go is because they were in this position with Arsene Wenger,” Carragher added.

“It’s slightly different – Arsene Wenger got a lot more time at the end because he was a legend and he had won so much – but I think Arsenal fans look back now and think they missed out on the two best managers in the Premier League and possibly the world, because they stuck too long with the manager.

“I think that’s where the resentment and the aggression from the supporters comes from. They are looking at Tottenham moving a manager on, maybe Manchester United will be doing so shortly, or in the summer, and they don’t want to miss out again.

“At this moment, I don’t think Unai Emery is Champions League level. He’s almost like Europa League level. A great career, what he’s done, but he’s not the level I think Arsenal need.”
