Aldi news: Opening one store a week until Christmas – three locations already announced

While coronavirus has meant closures and job losses across the UK, the Aldi openings reflect some good news. Aldi’s CEO revealed the plans.

Giles Hurley, Aldi UK’s chief executive said: “As much as the disruption of the past few months has been challenging, it has also reminded us that there are still hundreds of towns across the UK where shoppers don’t have access to Aldi’s award winning quality products and unbeatable prices.

“To continue doing this and meet our goals of making Aldi accessible to even more shoppers, we will need thousands more amazing colleagues across the country.

“I look forward to welcoming each and every one of them to the team.”

In July Aldi listed a large number of cities they were looking to expand into.

It said: “Our sustained growth means we are continually expanding our property portfolio to help achieve our ever-growing goals for 2022.

“We have ambitious acquisition and development plans beyond that and are looking to acquire sites that meet the following property criteria for our standard store format.”

A huge number of locations were listed in the “wish list.”

It includes locations on Surrey, Kent, Sussex, the Home Counties, Cumbria and more.

An Aldi spokesperson said: “Customers are encouraged to comply with the Government guidelines on face coverings but, like other retailers, our colleagues are not able to enforce these rules.”

Twitter users have criticised the choice made by some shops.

One wrote: “You are willing to endanger your staff and customers just because there are a few idiots who think they are too special to take basic precautions?”

Another said they will “no longer be using” any supermarket not enforcing the policy until the virus is gone.

They added: “Must put my family’s safety first.”
